Direct Routing vs. Operator Connect for Microsoft Teams
Both options have their pros and cons, and the choice between Direct Routing and Operator Connect depends on the organization's specific needs, including their preference for control, budget, and desired level of involvement in managing the telephony environment.
Allows organizations to connect their telephony infrastructure to Microsoft Teams, enabling voice services through the organization's chosen telephony provider.
Allows organizations to connect with certified telephony operators directly through Microsoft Teams without the need for on-premise infrastructure.
Requires expertise in Session Border Controllers (SBCs) and telephony integration.
Simplified setup through Microsoft Teams admin center with minimal configuration required.
High flexibility in choosing telephony providers and managing voice routing.
Less flexible; limited to the certified operators available through the Microsoft Operator Connect program.
Full control over the telephony environment, including security and failover configurations.
Limited control; most management and configuration are handled by the operator.
Potentially higher initial costs due to SBCs and ongoing maintenance. Costs vary based on the provider and setup complexity.
Generally lower upfront costs; pricing depends on the operator and selected plans, with costs bundled into a single bill.
Requires in-house or third-party support for SBCs and telephony infrastructure.
Support is primarily handled by the operator, with minimal in-house management.
Highly scalable, but requires additional infrastructure as the organization grows.
Easily scalable with scalability managed by the service provider.
Full responsibility for security.
Security is largely managed by the operator.
Broad global reach, depending on the telephony provider chosen by the organization.
Dependent on the operator's coverage; some operators may have regional limitations.
Can be integrated with existing on-premises telephony infrastructure.
Integration options are limited to what the operator provides, with less compatibility with existing on-premises systems.
